Cycling

Dorset has a selection of waymarked on-road cycling routes, marked with specific signs, through quiet country lanes or along forest tracks. Off-road cyclists may also use byways and bridleways.

Cycling in the Rural Dorset Countryside

To the north-west of the area, the North Dorset cycleway offers a choice of three challenging routes through the hills and vales of the Cranborne Chase, Blackmore Vale and the Dorset Downs.

The Castleman Trailway follows part of the route of the old Southampton to Dorchester railway line, from Upton in Poole through Wimborne and on to Ringwood.

The Castleman Trailway passes through Moors Valley Country Park, which itself offers a number of shorter of road routes for cyclists.

To the east, the neighbouring New Forest also has a variety of cycling routes, these are mostly very easy going and particularly suited to family leisure cycling.

Further details of these and other routes can be obtained in person from a local Tourist Information Centre.

News from Sustrans - The National Cycle Network
Dorset County Council, with support from North Dorset District Council, is progressing with plans to improve the surface of the old Somerset and Dorset Railway line between Spetisbury and Charlton-on-the-Hill to create a traffic-free section of Route 25. This should be completed during 2003. Negotiations continue to extend this section to Blandford Forum.

Signing of the on-road sections between Gillingham and Child Oakford, and between Wimborne Minster and Spetisbury, should also be completed during 2003.
